What we do

Parent Councils are the formal representative body for parents and carers who have young people attending the school - the parent forum.

The main aims of the Parent Council are to:

  • Work in partnership to support the school in its work with students
  • Work with the school to create a welcoming school environment
  • Represent the views of parents and carers
  • Promote communication and interaction between the school, parents and the community
  • Help parents to support their young person’s learning and welfare
  • Ensure that parents get the information they need and that the school gets feedback on parents’ views
  • Develop and engage in activities to support the education and welfare of our young people
  • Discuss, (and where necessary, to act upon) issues of interest or concern to parents
  • Receive reports and updates from the Head Teacher
  • Raise funds for the school for the benefit of the pupils

Dealing with individual issues do not fall within the remit of the parent Council. If such issues arise the chair will advise the parent to refer the matter to the student’s Pupil Support Teacher in the first instance. The matter can subsequently be escalated to the Year Head, Headteacher and/or the local authority if a satisfactory resolution is not achieved.

The Parent Council meets 5-6 times per year – currently online. The meetings last approximately 90 minutes and are open to all parents or carers of students attending the school.

Parents are invited to email  mclarenpc465@gmail.com at least a week in advance of any meetings with any points that they would like to raise in the meeting – either on its own right or as part of the AOB section.

It is the intention to email the proposed agenda in advance of the meeting and the minutes will be posted on the McLaren High School webpage under the ‘School life’ tab.

Current Goals

Encouraging the development of better communication links between the school and parents/carers. In the first instance by issuing a survey to all parents/carers to identify the key areas of importance in their children’s education

Raising the profile of the Parent Council and encouraging greater involvement and awareness.

We are always looking for new parents and carers to become involved. If you would like to learn more, or have an issue/idea you would like us to discuss, please get in touch by email, at mclarenpc465@gmail.com  Any points raised which potentially have a bearing on the whole school, (as opposed to affecting an individual student), would be considered for adding to a future Parents Council Meeting agenda.

Myth Busting

Myth: You have to be invited to join the Parent Council

Truth: Anyone who is a parent or carer of a pupil at the school is welcome to attend Parent Council meetings

Myth: By attending you will get ‘roped in’ to the Parent Council?

Truth: It’s entirely your choice to what extent you want to become involved.

Myth: You have to be available to meet.

Truth: Currently our meetings are online so you can attend from your own home.

Myth: You have to be qualified to contribute or at least very confident to take part.

Truth: If you prefer to attend and listen without actively participating, then you are perfectly free to do so. If you’re not comfortable bringing something up in person, then you can ask for items to be added to the agenda or brought up on your behalf, (anonymously if you prefer), in advance of the meeting.

Myth: Meetings last ages and you need to commit too much of your time.

Truth: Meeting last a maximum of 90 minutes and are only held around 6 times per year.

Myth: It is a ‘closed shop’ where people just moan?

Truth: It is an open forum where parents are invited to share their ideas with the school, and in turn to be kept up to date with plans and developments in order to achieve our mutual aim – to help our students maximise their potential during their time at the school.
